January 12th 2017 marked the exact date of the 150 years since the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation and on January 18th the anniversary celebrations were officially started by the opening of the exhibition “Japanomania 1875-1918” at the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) in Copenhagen.
Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nobou Kishi was in Denmark to participate in the opening of the exhibition and the anniversary. Prior to the opening, Kishi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Anders Samuelsen to discuss strengthening of the strategic partnership Japan and Denmark agreed on in 2014. Strengthening of the strategic partnership is set out as a priority in the Danish government platform.
H.R.H. Crown Prince Frederik attended the opening as the Danish Honorary Patron of the anniversary, as did Minister of Culture Mette Bock. Both the Japanese Ambassador to Denmark, Toshiro Suzuki, and the Danish Ambassador to Japan, Freddy Svane, attended as well.
