The 150th Anniversary of Japan-Denmark Diplomatic Relations

In 2017, Denmark and Japan will celebrate 150 years anniversary of diplomatic relations since the conclusion of the “Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation” in 1867.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the interaction between the people of Japan and Denmark has blossomed with increasing speed in all facets of human relations. The 150th anniversary will be an excellent occasion both to review the development of our friendly relationship and to further strengthen the ties between our two countries

The Danish and Japanese governments are determined to enhance the bilateral relationship, and official events to celebrate the anniversary will build on the foundation of the Strategic Partnership agreed by the Prime Ministers of both countries in March 2014.

The Logo

Danish people speak Danish. Japanese people speak Japanese. Yet we speak the same language when it comes to design and aesthetics. Danish Design is very popular in Japan – and that is no coincidence! Some of the most famous Danish designers of the 20th century visited Japan or were inspired by Japan in other ways. Today, we see inspiration and interaction flowing both ways and the official anniversary logo is a great example of this.

The logo combines the two countries flags – Japan’s rising sun and Denmark’s white cross – into one uniform symbol with added lines to suggest meetings and a dynamic interaction. The logo references traditional Japanese patterns and also Danish simplicity and aesthetics.

The logo and the supporting logo text is designed in collaboration between Danish designer, Mr. Henrik Kubel and Japanese designer Mr. Katsumi Asaba.

The 150 years anniversary is the anniversary of all Danes and Japanese, and the logo is available for events and activities by non-governmental actors as long as they fulfil some basic requirements and contribute to the 150 years celebrations. The logo is also available for media in connections with articles etc. about the 150 years anniversary.

Media representatives are asked to send an email to briefly stating the usage of the logo with the subject “Request for anniversary logo”.
