Focus and Responsibilities
Denmark and Japan cooperate on a joint strategic work programme working towards a comprehensive sustainable and green future. The partnership focuses on government cooperation and economic growth including a partnership on energy policy.
Working under the Danish Energy Agency’s Energy Governance Partnership Programme for offshore wind energy, the Senior Energy Advisor will be an integral part of the Economic Diplomacy set-up, supporting the progress on the energy partnership between Denmark and Japan and Green Diplomacy.
Specifically, the Senior Energy Advisor will support bilateral projects between Japan and Denmark, public diplomacy, relationship building and activities with authorities, academic, institutional and company partners on energy related topics. Close cooperation with Trade Council that works to create access for Danish businesses and resolve political and technical barriers is expected, especially within the field of wind energy, green hydrogen and sector integration.
The Royal Danish Embassy in Japan seeks an action-oriented advisor who is passionate about supporting Danish-Japanese strategic cooperation and program deliverables in the fields of energy and sustainability.
Main tasks and responsibilities as Senior Energy Advisor
- Support the implementation of the work programme for the Energy Governance Partnership (EGP) programme, including direct support to the Minister Counsellor for Energy
- Analysis of Japanese energy policy
- Frequent communication with the Japanese Authorities
- Supporting bilateral projects between Japan and Denmark, public diplomacy, advocacy and strategic alliances development
- Relationship building, events and activities with authorities, academic, institutional and company partners
- Planning and execution of incoming and outgoing visits between Denmark and Japan
Requirements and working conditions
Applicants must have relevant experience from the energy or environment related field, a Master’s educational background in political science, business administration, engineering, or a related field. The ideal candidate is a self-motivator, proactive and a people connector. The applicant must also be well-organized with a focus on details, independent, innovative and able to create new ideas for the team.
Strong English and fluent Japanese language skills are required. Experience and network within the energy policy and energy system sector, including experience with Japanese officials and organizations is an advantage. The embassy is an event-based workplace, therefore multitasking skills with ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines under pressure and manage responsibilities independently is expected with a high sense of responsibility.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and diplomacy skills are necessary, as is the ability to synthesize, simplify and translate complex energy issues to a broad audience. Previous experience in working with government bodies in- and outside of Japan will be highly valued, as will previous experience with the offshore wind sector.

- You will be hired as a local employee at the Danish Embassy in Tokyo with an initial contract until 31.12.2028, with the possibility of extension. You will be part of the embassy staff and report to the Minister Counsellor for Energy. In your daily work, you will collaborate closely with the commercial employees in the embassy as well as other staff within the embassy.
- Salary according to qualifications within a public organization. 5 weeks of paid annual leave and a flexible work/life balance Danish working scheme and 40 hours working week. A level of travel activity is expected domestically and to Denmark.
Expected start:
1st. of August, or soon thereafter. Employment with the Embassy requires security clearance by the Danish Security and Intelligence Service and thus expected start is dependent on this.
The chosen candidate must present a “No Criminal Record. Salary and benefits will be based on experience and competencies.

About the Energy Governance Partnership (EGP)
EGP is a government-to-government cooperation programme between the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, the Danish Energy Agency and select energy authorities in partner countries to share experiences with energy policy, framework conditions and regulation. The goal of exchanging energy experiences is to decrease GHG emission reductions by expanding energy markets and accelerating the uptake of green energy solutions and technologies. The EGP programme is implemented through a close cooperation between the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, the Danish Energy Agency, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Trade Council.
