Introduction to Japan

With a population of around 125 million, Japan is one of the largest markets in the world and constitute a key role in the global economy and international politics. Despite the large size of the country, approximately half of the population lives in urban areas in central Japan, all of which can be reached within a few hours through effective infrastructure. The country has set ambitious goals for green transformation, which includes a target to become a carbon-neutral society by 2050. To this end, the development of Japanese offshore wind is one of the areas of focus in the coming years. At the same time, sustainability is also becoming more of a focus for Japanese consumers, creating new opportunities in areas such as the food sector. An ageing population is creating increased demand for medical and welfare products and services. Although we in Denmark consider Japan to be a frontrunner in technology, there is huge potential for modernisation, particularly in the field of public digitalisation.

To further boost growth in these areas, Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida has launched his new “New Capitalism” doctrine, which focuses on sustainable development in digitalisation, innovation, greening and investment in people and start-ups in Japan. For these focus areas, Danish companies have the solutions, and at the Embassy is ready to advise and consult you on your journey in Japan.

Surveys of foreign investors in Japan demonstrate that the country is regarded as more attractive than other Asian markets in the sectors of ICT, retail and life science. Furthermore, the survey shows that Japan scores top marks by foreign investors in six areas of competitiveness: R&D quality, transparency/stability, labour skills, infrastructure and life quality measures.
