Business cases fra The Trade Council i Tokyo


Following a very successful launch in the spring of 2020 on the crowdfunding platform Campfire, the Danish e-bike company MATE recently opened a new flagship store in Ebisu, nearby Shibuya and not far from the Danish Embassy in Tokyo. This is in line with what several Danish companies have told the Embassy: COVID-19 provides new possibilities for Danish retail in Japan as finding shop locations have become easier. The Embassy assisted MATE with the entry to the Japanese market, making local press and influencers interested in the brand. And now, MATE works with local distributors and is partnering with one of the biggest celebrities/models/actors in Japan, Yosuke Kubozuka as a brand ambassador.

Bavarian Nordic:

Bavarian Nordic was founded 25 years ago and has built a strong presence in Medicon Valley as a cutting-edge company active primarily in the vaccine field.

Now in 2019, Bavarian Nordic made a strategic decision to share their expertise in vaccine development and manufacturing through starting up a CDMO service (outsourcing of development and manufacturing of vaccines). Mr. Rutger Vandiest, Global Head of Sales, Contract Manufacuring, recently visited Japan and we took the opportunity to ask him three quick questions. Read Mr. Rutgers answers here.


AAK, a leading provider og value-adding vegetable oils and fats, enters the Japanese market.  

The Trade Council assisted AAK in finding a joint centure partner in Japan. Through the embassy's network, and the help of the Food & Agriculture Team, AAK landed an agreement with Japanese Miyoshi Oils & Fats Co. Further reading: AKK-case.

Kopenhagen Fur:

Kopenhagen Fur, the biggest fur house in the world, reclaims the Japanese fur market with help from the Trade Council.

The Trade Council assisted Kopenhagen Fur in expanding their trade and export to Japan, by identifying suitable business partners, offering counsel and facilitating workshops. See the full article here (Danish).

Fynbo Foods:

Fynbo Foods, a Danish producer of marmalade, took part in a Vitus-course with the Trade Council.

The Trade Council assisted Fynbo Foods via a tailored, export-counselling program. Through the program, Fynbo Foods entered into dialogue with 10 potential new customers, as well as identifying additional 25-30 retail chains to engage. See the full article here (Danish).


Xergi, a leading supplier of advanced turnkey biogas plants, finds new partner in the Japan with the help of the Trade Council.  

Xergi expands its presence in Asia by launching a partnership in Japan with Sumitomo Seika Chemicals. The Trade Council acted as export advisor to Xergi in connection with the partner search that ultimately led to the partnership agreement between Xergi and Sumitomo Seika Chemicals. Sparrow Quantum:

Sparrow Quantum, developer and commercializer of photonic quantum technology components, enters the Japanese market. The Trade Council assisted in potential partner identifucation and promoting the company and product.

DYKON’s export to Japan accelerates as the company signs on new distributors. Danish furniture and interior brands have been in high demand in Japan for many decades, and one company that is currently reaping the economic benefits from their continued focus and commitment to the Japanese market is DYKON A/S. The company recently entered into agreement with three new Japanese distributors that gives DYKON access to new retail stores in major cities in Japan and helps solidify its position in Japan.

Samson Pumps:

Samson Pumps, a manufacturer of liquid ring vacuum pumps, have started doing business with 3 Japanese companies, following assistance from the Trade Council in Tokyo. In 2016, The Trade Council assisted Samson Pumps in a partner search and matchmaking program. Among other things, the Trade Council assisted in partner candidate identification and screening, organizing company and expo visits, facilitating meetings with relevant stakeholders, CEO’s, engineers and manufacturers, and engaging with decision makers. As a result of their collaboration with The Trade Council, as of 2019, Samson Pumps have now successfully expanded their business operations to Japan.
